Valentine’s Day… A holiday renowned for the feelings of warmth, love, and companionship that it brings, exploited by propaganda and noted by many. Celebrated by those of all ages on February 14th in most countries of the world, the holiday rejoices love in all its forms, yet has little religious significance.
Originating in pagan times, Romans celebrated it as the annual Feast of Lupercailia (fertility festival). It involved the unique custom of young men choosing the names of women at random (like a lottery system or choosing names from a bowl) and mating with their ‘chosen’ for a year. More often than not, the couple would fall in love and marry. The practice set the mood for Valentine’s Day as we know it however its name and clearer meaning was taken from the defiance of Saint Valentine against Emperor Claudius II, who banned all marriages and engagements in Rome. Valentine, secretly married couples but when the defiance came to light he was brutally beaten and put to death on February 14th, about 270 AD. By the middle ages he become the patron Saint of love & lovers in England & France and has remained as the holiday’s icon.
Traditionally the most important custom of Valentine Day is the exchange of love notes (Valentine’s) by lovers. Over the years the custom has evolved to include the giving of such to children, parents, teachers, siblings and even pets, and now incorporates other items such as candies, chocolates, jewelry, stuffed animals, and flowers. In fact, 1 of 5 valentines received yearly is by parents, and approximately 3% of pet owners will give a gift to their pets. It is estimated that over 50 million roses are given worldwide for Valentines every year, and card sales jump, making it one of the largest card-giving occasions of the year 2nd only to Christmas.
Being the month of love and with so much to be grateful for, we have searched for you a number of things you can do throughout February to share precious time with your loved ones.
